A Heating cable is sometimes laid on the bottom of the tank, under the substrate. The purpose of such cable is actually not to heat the substrate or the roots (as one might think) but rather provide a circulation of fresh water into the substrate. This circulation allows for oxygen to reach deep into the substrate, preventing anaerobic rot.
